When Rebellion first opened its doors
way back in 1976, fashion for women was frankly rather dull.
Youngsters had the punk revolution, but not everyone wanted
to be a punk!
The founders of Rebellion
knew there was huge demand for clothes that were interesting,
stylish and comfortable, where the mainstream had become dowdy
and dull. This was the decade that perfected mass production
of clothing; but stylish women did not want to conform, nor
to be part of the masses.
This was the context for founding Rebellion; to provide stylish,
interesting and exclusive clothes for real contemporary women.
The name was inspirational; the Monmouth Rebellion was an
uprising of common people against the society of their day.
For many years a portrait of the Duke of Monmouth adorned
the shop. He’s gone now, but the spirit of rebelling
against dull and dowdy conformity lives on.
